PURPOSE OF JOB: Working with diverse security staff and other school staff utilizing the equipment and technology in the Integrated security systems and adhering to established safety procedures and protocols to protect the students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City Public Schools District. The site-based security officer’s actions cannot be intolerably harsh and rigid when enforcing the safety policies, procedures, and protocols. The site-based security officers must always have respect and regard for the students and staff’s emotional and social well-being.   Job duties require continued readiness to respond to situations within specified departmental procedures that may be life-threatening or harmful, including exposure to dangerous chemicals or other toxic substances, infectious diseases, fire, gunshots, physical confrontations, etc.  Duties are performed as assigned in all weather conditions and on any shift (day or night). Conduct foot patrols (monitor) inside and outside assigned schools.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  includes the following. 

 

  1. General duties consist of preserving the peace, protecting District property, preventing criminal acts, apprehension of violators, enforcement of District policies, enforcement of the Student Handbook, and adherence to the policies and procedures contained in the Security Department’s Operations Manual.
  2. The site-based security officer shall be under the direct supervision of the first line security site-based security supervisor to whose area they are assigned.  The site-based officer shall perform all duties prescribed by the first line site-based security supervisor or the assistant security director (or designee).
  3. Duties are performed as assigned in all weather conditions and on any shift (day or night).  Must be able to work any shift as assigned with the understanding that the Security Department has a 24-hour responsibility to protect the students, staff, equipment, and facilities of the Kansas City, Missouri School District.
  4. The site-based security officer shall act under the direction of the school’s principal for day-to-day activities.  However, the site-based security officer will remain under the management control of the Safety & Security Department.
  5. Must remain professional and objective in all situations.  Exercise sound judgment while under stress.
  6. Must be able to react to situations utilizing appropriate levels of force as required and within the Security Department and district-wide level of force options.
  7. Must communicate verbally, in body language, and in writing.
  8.  Reports must be clear, concise, and complete with minimal spelling and grammar errors.
  9.  Shall be familiar with all district policies and administrative directives that affect the operation of the Security Department.
  10. Shall familiarize themselves with federal & state laws and city ordinances as they apply to the School District.
  11. Attend all in-service training, as may be required by the Security Department Management.
  12. Shall accept transfers to different assignments in the district’s best interest.
  13. Responsible for maintaining and cleaning department-issued equipment.
  14. Shall be responsible for answering calls for service routed from the dispatcher communication center via district-issued cell phones, hand-held radios, mobile base station radios, and other modes of communication.
  15. Initiate contact with and maintain a good working relationship with other law enforcement agencies and security organizations during their job performance.
  16. Other duties may be assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  None

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  1. High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.
  2. Successfully pass the Safety & Security Department pre-hire multiple choice test and oral interview process.
  3. Successfully passed the Kansas City Public Schools pre-employment drug screen.
    1. Note: Subject to post-accident drug screens and reasonable suspicion drug screens.
  4. Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre-employment physical abilities test.
    1. Note: Subject to physical abilities testing following an illness or injury that requires an officer to be absent from duty for a prolonged period.
  5. Successfully pass the Kansas City Public Schools pre-employment psychological exam.
    1. Note: Subject to psychological testing following a catastrophic event or injury.
  6. Must obtain a Certificate of Completion for IS-100.C - Introduction to the Incident Command System.
  7. Must obtain a Certificate of Completion for IS-700.b – Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  8. Qualify for and maintain a Private Officers’ Commission from the Kansas City Missouri Police Department. Note: Must pass the district drug screen annually when renewing the Private Officers’ Commission.
  9. Be insurable with the district insurance provider.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  

 

  1. Previous law enforcement and security experience.
  2. Prior experience working with juveniles in an academic environment.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The physical demands described here must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully.  Reasonable accommodations may enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions. The job requires the employee to sit, stand and walk for long periods. The position requires the employee to speak, hear, use hands, and fingers, reach with hands and fingers, bend, and stoop.  The employee must be able to walk & run up and down stairs and engage in physical confrontations in all types of climatic conditions during the day or night.  The job requires the employee to be able to do some lifting to 50 lbs. The position requires that the employee be able to hear. Visual ability requires mono and color vision.   Vision must be correctable to 20/20.  The job requires the employee to be able to drive a motor vehicle for long periods during the daytime and nighttime and in all types of weather conditions. The position requires the employee to enter and exit a motor vehicle several times throughout their assigned work shift.  The position requires that the employee pass the pre-employment physical abilities test.
