Job Title: New Americans Elementary ESL Teacher

Reports To: Principal or Designee

PURPOSE OF JOB

Teaches one or more subjects to English Language Learners in public schools by performing the following duties:

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Creates lessons that bridge students into literacy and numeracy.

Uses knowledge of students’ cultural backgrounds to advocate for their needs in a new environment.

Collaborates with teachers to create projects, lessons, resources and develop curriculum.

Assigns lessons and corrects homework.

Administers tests to evaluate pupil progress, records results, and issues reports to inform parents of progress.

Keeps attendance records.

Maintains discipline in classroom.

Connects students and families with school staff and other district resources.

Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.

Maintains a log of parent contact/communication using Student Information System.

Ensures that communications to parents are translated into parents’ home language to the extent possible. 

Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

Performs related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling student in adjustment and academic problems.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from four-year college or university

Missouri State Certification in Elementary Education

ESOL Certification

Native or near native speaker-like English language proficiency in reading, writing, listening and speaking

 

SUCCESS FACTORS

Demonstrated background in current ESL techniques and skills in teaching secondary level students.

Demonstrated experience and/or training in working with refugees and new arrivals.

Demonstrated experience and/or training in a variety of basic literacy strategies and approaches.

Teaching experience in urban schools.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of work year: 10 month calendar

 

KCPS Defined Benefit Pension plan – mandatory 8.5% contribution (increasing to 9% effective 1/1/16) is required from employee and matched by KCPS; Voluntary retirement savings plans are also available
