PURPOSE OF JOB: The job of Student Support Specialist is done for the purpose/s of assisting teachers and Administrator in monitoring an effective in-school suspension (ISS) program and other behavioral interventions which will provide a systematic continuum of services to serve the students at their levels of need; helping students resolve personal, emotional, social problems, which may interfere with adjustment to school; managing student information database systems; analyzing problems and issues related to students at their level of need; and producing a wide variety of statistical reports.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following.

 

  1. Promote a positive learning environment while establishing expectations for behavior and conduct for all students
  2. Collaborates with teachers and other district personnel (e.g. Professional Development Chairperson, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate programs to meet in-service needs.
  3. Monitor student progress to ensure students remain current with classroom assignments
  4. Coordinates case supervision for students in ISS (e.g. conferences with students, administrator, parents, etc.) for the purpose of reviewing student problems/progress.
  5. Designs reports options (e.g. attendance and grade records, case files for ISS students, referral reports, behavioral modification programs, etc.) for the purpose of providing administration with information customized to each ISS student's needs.
  6. Identifies issues related to the student suspension program (e.g. behavior intervention strategies, etc.) for the purpose of assessing ISS student progress.
  7. Inputs data into student information system (e.g. student record updates, assessment records, attendance, scheduling, grading, transcripts, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring accuracy of data for in school suspension program.
  8. Maintains contact log (e.g. with parents and all interventions, inputted into KCPS's data system, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of student progress information.
  9. Monitors intake processes, case files (e.g. intervention determination, behavior management/plans, ISS program effectiveness, etc.) for the purpose of implementing necessary assessment procedures for ISS students.
  10. Participates/facilitates in meetings and workshops (e.g. Building Leadership Team, etc.) for the purpose of communicating student support program capabilities and/or accommodating district goals.
  11. Responds to inquiries relating to in-school suspension program (e.g. student behavioral attitudes requested by parents and administration, case supervision of students, etc.) for the purpose of relaying information and supporting program by communicating to stake holders.
  12. Reviews academic and behavioral success/deficiencies with students in working to meet goals for the purpose of providing guiding and training for ISS students.
  13. Other related duties as assigned 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • 60 college hours with a grade point average of at least 2.5
  • Missouri state substitute teacher certification
  • Skills in working with children and their parents
  • Desire to work with elementary or secondary school children

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three (3) years successful experience working with elementary or secondary school children and their parents
  • Course work in education and/or social work/behavioral therapy
  • Bi-lingual – Spanish where necessary
