Job Title:              Behavioral Therapist – Alternative Schools

Job Title Code:    01585

Salary Grade:      J61 ($21.03 – $34.75)

Reports To:          PRINCIPAL

FLSA Status:        Non-Exempt

PURPOSE OF JOB:  To help students resolve such personal, emotional, and social problems as interfere with their ability to thrive and learn as well as limit their capacity to enjoy the fullest benefits of the education offered during the regular school year as well as summer school.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  include the following. 

 

Provide brief, short and long-term clinical interventions focused on correcting negative behaviors through strategies focused on conflict resolution, anger management, positive response to authority, grief, and the like.

 

Conduct individual and small group sessions with students focused to improve their ability to work on identifying triggers and events that result in negative behaviors.

 

Develop an individualized behavior intervention plan that identifies and establishes benchmarks to measure the readiness of the student to successfully return to the traditional classroom environment.

 

Perform services with parents as an integral part of the task of helping students, to increase the parents’ understanding, their constructive participation in resolving their child’s problems, and their knowledge and use of appropriate resources available.

 

Present staff in-service or arrange for such in-services.

 

Provide behavior modification strategies to alternative staff.

 

Remain current and knowledgeable about supplemental services and agencies available for referral.

 

Provide referrals to all appropriate partner agencies as needed.

 

Participate as a member of school treatment team.

 

Maintain accurate, complete and confidential student files. 

 

Maintain and update current records on students as required by Kansas City Public Schools and State and keep Regional Registry updated.

 

Provide written status reports on each student.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  None

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor or Master Degree in Psychology, clinical psychology, counseling, or related field
  • Minimum of three years experience in individual and small group clinical intervention.
  • Previous experience working with Local, State or Federal Agencies.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to organize work schedule to include student counseling sessions during the course of the school day.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Multi-cultural and bi-lingual Spanish or Somali, based on population served.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of work year: 10.5 months (7.5 hours per day/5 days per week)

KCPS Defined Benefit Pension plan – mandatory 9% contribution is required from employee and matched by KCPS; Voluntary retirement savings plans are also available.
