PURPOSE OF JOB: To assist Pre-K instructional teams by supporting effective classroom routines and carrying out developmentally appropriate learning activities. The Part-Time Early Learning Assistant (P.E.L.A.) will assist Pre-K teaching teams by guiding young children through activities designed to promote the social, physical, and intellectual growth needed for Kindergarten preparedness by performing the following duties.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

    1. Adheres to all state child care licensing regulations, KCPS Pre-K regulations and policies.
    2. Monitors the arrival and departure of students according to Pre-K requirements and keeping daily records of students, as applicable.
    3. Follows district guidelines for reporting incidents, suspected abuse, neglect or contagious disease, communicating with relevant building and program administrators in a timely manner.
    4. Maintains minimum adequate staff-student ratio and supervisory requirements at all times, which may include substituting as needed.
    5. Participates in cleaning and safety requirements of the Pre-K program, including following required transition procedures when moving children from one area of the school to another.
    6. Implements data-driven lesson plans utilizing the approved curriculum, assessments, which include daily classroom routines, procedures and individualization. 
    7. Promotes and supports children’s social, emotional and physical development consistent with the philosophy of Creative Curriculum and Conscious Discipline classroom management techniques.
    8. Attends all assigned training and professional development opportunities as required.
    9. Maintains a welcoming and professional demeanor and a positive environment when working with children, families, colleagues, and building administrators which align with the philosophy of KCPS Early Learning and Conscious Discipline.
    10. Utilizes relevant district communications, email, software ad technology effectively in the performance of duties.
    11. Maintains up to date Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED-BL certification.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: None

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess a high school diploma.
  2. Desire and ability to work with children ages three and four years old and understand the developmental needs of this age group.
  3. Must pass the pre-employment investigation, Criminal/Child Abuse background Check and submission of an initial physical and TB screening.
  4. Individuals must have access to reliable transportation as the position may require travel to various Pre-K locations.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Possess a Child Development Associate Credential (CDA) and/or a two or four year undergraduate degree or willing to enroll in a program that will lead to an associate or baccalaureate degree or, are enrolled in a CDA credential program to be completed within 2 years of hire.
  2. Qualifying score on the ParaPro Assessment or Sixty (60) college hours with a grade point average of at least 2.5. Twenty-four (24) of the sixty (60) hours must be in early childhood, youth development or child/family related courses.
  3. Missouri state substitute teacher certification.
  4. Experience working with children and families in an urban setting

This job requires that the employee be able to: sit, stand, walk, speak, hear, use hands, fingers, reach with hands and fingers; bend, stoop, lift objects/children of at least forty pounds; use stairs; move quickly from one space to another; spend extended time outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; visual ability requires mono and color vision.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Temporary. Part-time

 

Length of work year: 10 months. (10 months- Up to five and a half (5.5) hours per day/five days per week (27.5 hours per week total) - (note: follows KCPS school calendar). Several school day shift options are available based on the start time of the school. Position cannot be coordinated with other full-time KCPS employment.
